London -

A man has died in heavy downpours and flash flooding that hit south-western and central parts of England, causing severe transport disruption, the authorities said on Friday.

The man who died got trapped in his car in flood water in the south-western county of Somerset late on Thursday, police said.

Automobile organisations warned drivers not to plough through flood waters, and to be prepared for sudden road closures.

The south-western counties of Devon and Dorset were badly affected, with cities like Bristol and Bath on flood alert.

More heavy rainfall and high winds are expected over the next few days. - Sapa-dpa
