Mississippi has finally abolished slavery - almost 150 years after the rest of the US.
The change is thanks to staff at the University of Mississippi, who researched the US constitution’s 13th Amendment after seeing Oscar-nominated film Lincoln.
They found Mississippi was the only state never officially to vote for the law, which bans slavery.
The US constitution website noted: “Mississippi ratified the amendment in 1995, but because the state never officially notified the US Archivist, the ratification is not official.”
The filmgoers tracked down the proper paperwork and it was officially filed on January 30.
It is not known why the copy of the amendment was not sent in 1995. - Daily Mail
