Nothing wrong with a thong, says squash body

London - The world body for women's squash has given the green light to thongs in the wake of a controversy involving English player Vicky Botwright at the British Open.

Botwright caused a stir earlier this month when photographs of the Manchester-based world No 18 wearing a thong were published in a variety of British newspapers.

The snaps saw Botwright dubbed the "Lancashire hot bot" - and led to Women's International Squash Players Association (WISPA) suggesting a thong was inappropriate.

However, the body has decided no formal ruling against the skimpy underwear is necessary.

"The WISPA Board is happy with the current clause in the clothing rule which states that 'all clothing shall conform to the accepted standards of decency and cultural/religious traditions of the country in which the competition is taking place'," WISPA director Andrew Shelley said.

"What we would term abbreviated clothing is okay, and we have faith in the common sense of the members," Shelley said in a statement.

Botwright defended her choice of underwear during the controversy.

"We should be able to wear skimpy clothing if we want to, as some of the more conventional outfits we wear can be quite restrictive," she said.

"I'm sure if we were allowed to wear things like this, a lot of players would." - Sapa-AFP
