PICS: Ramadaan in the ruins of rebel-held Douma

Damascus - In the besieged neighbourhood of Douma, Syrian Muslims observed the holy month of Ramadaan among the ruins of the centre of the Rif Dimashq governorate, and the administrative centre of Douma District.

The month-long fast from sunrise to sunset is particularly poignant in this Syrian neighbourhood as locals lay out their Iftaar meal on communal tables among the ruins of the once-beautiful streets where children laughed and played together before the civil war brought death and destruction.

Located about 10km from Damascus, Douma was the site of one of the Syrian conflict's bloodiest massacres in June 2012, during which the Syrian Army was accused of killing more than 50 people with ground-to-ground missiles. Many people from the suburb are still officially missing.

The Douma neighbourhood has been under the control of rebels from the Free Syrian Army since October 2012.
