Quetta, Pakistan - The two relatives of Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar killed in a United States raid on his house this week were his 10-year-old son and his stepfather, residents fleeing Kandahar said on Thursday.

They said the Taliban leader had just left when a bomb struck one of his houses in the Sangisar district of the city, but many members of his family were inside.

US officials in Washington said on Tuesday that the first night of raids, aimed at rooting out Osama bin Laden and his Taliban protectors, had resulted in the deaths of two adult members of Mullah Omar's family.

But several Kandahar residents who have crossed into Pakistan said those killed were his young son and stepfather.

They said Mullah Omar's natural father had died years before and, following Afghan custom, his mother had married his uncle.

The Taliban's ambassador to Pakistan, Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef, on Thursday refused to confirm or deny whether any of Mullah Omar's famly had been killed, saying cryptically: "All Afghans are his relatives." - Reuters
