Margaret Gardiner gets celebrities to share their outlook for the coming year:

Hugh Jackman

I’m older than 30. I’ve finally worked out that New Year’s Eve is usually the most disappointing party night of the year. I made that mistake from 18 – well, let’s say 15 to 30. I’d expected it to be the best night of the year. Now, usually, it’s relatively quiet with just my family and maybe some friends. That’s now my favourite way to do it. I do indulge occasionally in the whole resolution side of it. Most of the time they don’t stick. I don’t bother with them. It’s a good time to reflect about what’s important in life and the people that matter most. I’m quite hard on myself. I like to push myself and give myself an obstacle or task. Whether I deliberately choose it or not, it seems to be there.

Helen Mirren

Every year I make the same resolution. I think we can all guess what it is – it’s don’t be so lazy and lose weight. It’s always the same. Go to the gym. It’s been the same resolution for 40 years and it’s still not working. But we live in hope.

Gerard Butler

I want to be more spiritual. I love my work, but I like to take time off to hike, especially in Scotland. I like learning something new and challenging myself.

Christina Hendricks:

I think balance is important in life, so finding my own and giving it to others.

Jessica Biel

I’ll make the same resolution I make every year, which is to learn a new language. Fluently. I learned French all through middle school and high school, so I have a technical understanding of it. I’m close. I think if I could live in France for a few months or got immersed, it would happen, but I’ll be making that new year’s resolution again this year.

Michelle Pfeiffer

Simplify. Simplify. Simplify. I don’t want anything else. But I do want to slow down so I can enjoy my blessings. It sounds so simple but it’s a real challenge.

Olivia Wilde

I love reading and never get time to read any more. I’d like to try to read more novels.

Ashton Kutcher

It’s easy to say we want a better world. I’d like to see everyone working at peace and joy through proactive generosity.

Hilary Swank

I say the same thing every year, but this year I really mean it (laughing). Simply to slow down and take time for myself.

Sarah Jessica Parker

I tend not to make them and if I do, I tend to keep them secret – so I can’t be busted for breaking them.

Glenn Close

I’d like to get to a point where I could spend time writing every day. I want to get into the habit of writing, but it’s also important to renew yourself, and find balance.

Anne Hathaway

I try and see humour in most situations. Very often what is scary is actually just ridiculous. I’m trying to be more aware of my breathing. I practise yoga. I became a vegan about a year ago and really impacted my life in terms of how to interact with the world around me, my level of peace.

My goal for the new year is trying to live a holistic life that isn’t built on destruction.

If at the end of the day I did my best that day then I can forgive myself more.

Megan Fox

I don’t think I’ll be able to leave the house on New Year’s Eve, as I’m a new mum (laughter), but we have a wide open piece of property, so we can see all the fireworks around Los Angeles. As I’m not drinking because I’m breast-feeding, I’ll have some cranberry juice. I haven’t got a specific new year’s resolution. Ultimately I would like to be a better person. I would like to get rid of any vindictive or jealous spirit that might exist in me. It’s a very human emotion that I would ultimately like to do away with.

Amanda Seyfried

I like to be in the mountains. This new year my sister and my 92-year-old grandmother, and my best friend, Alex, who’s part of my family, and my mother are going to drive up to a farmhouse I rented in New Rhinebeck in upstate New York. Another friend will do the cooking. My grandmother is so happy with a glass of wine and a book, so she will read and we will just sit around. I have 400 acres for my dog, Finn, to run around in. So, I’ll start the year off with family and friends, and it will be calm and profound.

Jon Bon Jovi

I’ve had so many great experiences in life – my life is surreal and so blessed. I’m happy with it. I love the idea that we go on that stage or that I pursue things I would not have done at 30. I’m not a coulda, shoulda, woulda, kind of guy. We are going on tour in 2013, including South Africa. I’m really looking forward to that. -Weekend Argus
