Washington - The New York real estate mogul Donald Trump is holding on his top position among the crowded Republican presidential field by a wide margin and has won the party’s trust on top issues more than any other candidates, a new CNN/ORC poll said on Tuesday.

According to the survey, 24 percent of Republican registered voters say they support Trump, while the runner-up former Florida Governor Jeb Bush has garnered 13 percent.

The supporting rate for all the other 15 Republican candidates was stuck in single digit respectively, the survey found.

After the first Republican prime-time primary debate in August, Trump’s favourability rate also increased, rising from about 50 percent in a July survey to 58 percent among Republicans and Republican-leaning voters, indicated the survey.

Despite the high favourability rate, however, Trump is not regarded by the party’s majority as the ideal candidate to win back the White House from the Democrats.

As many as 58 percent of Republicans believe the Republican Party would have a better chance to win in 2016 with someone else other than Trump among the top tier.

Meanwhile, though Trump would not unveil his first batch of policies and governing plans till the second primary debate that starts in September, Republican voters trust him more than any other Republican candidates on several top issues.

According to the survey, 45 percent say they trust Trump most on the economy, 44 percent on illegal immigration and 32 percent on his campaign against the extremist group of the Islamic State.
