Lianne Smith, the British mother awaiting trial in Spain for killing her two children, has been told that her convicted paedophile partner is not their father.

She says police informed her that DNA tests on the bodies of five-year-old Rebecca and 11-month-old Daniel prove they are no relation to former TV psychic Martin Smith.

On Sunday she described the claims as “nonsense” and added: “I've never been unfaithful.”

Smith, 44, fled Britain with her lover in 2007 after he was accused of raping and sexually assaulting a young girl during a decade-long reign of terror.

He was extradited from Spain in May and days later Smith, a former children's social worker in Cumbria, is alleged to have smothered Rebecca and Daniel with a plastic bag in a hotel room on the Costa Brava.

She has said she did it so they could not be taken into care.

From her prison cell on Sunday she said: “The Spanish police must have mixed up the DNA samples. I know I've only slept with Martin since we got together. They're both definitely Martin's children. Daniel was conceived when we got to Spain. Is anyone seriously suggesting that I slept with someone in Spain? It's ludicrous.

“Martin knows they're both his and I know he'll know the DNA tests are wrong.

“I want to get the tests re-done by someone independent in the UK but I'm not sure the Spanish authorities will let me. It feels like such a cruel accusation. I love Martin and would never even think of cheating on him.”

Smith, who faces 20 years in jail if found guilty of murder, told a friend that she has instructed solicitors to order new pathology results on her children's bodies.

She added: “I was devastated when the Spanish police told me the DNA tests showed that our children were not Martin's.

“I've never been unfaithful to him and never would. It's all a smear campaign to punish me even more.”

In an interview published last week, Smith explained why she took her children's lives.

She said: “I worked in social services. I know how terrible the children's lives are in care. I couldn't let them be taken away knowing what their life would be like. Children in care have no chance.”

Martin Smith was remanded in custody until February following his conviction at Manchester Crown Court last week but Mr Justice Stephen Irwin said a “significant custodial sentence is inevitable”. The 45-year-old former Butlin's entertainer used hypnotism and violence to abuse his victim from when she was seven.

During the week-long trial, Miss Smith gave evidence via a videolink on his behalf. She described the girl's testimony as “absolute nonsense”.

After the verdict, the victim issued a statement saying: “My motivation has always been to protect other children from Martin Smith.

“He abused me for more than a decade. Even after his arrest he prolonged my agony by fleeing abroad.” - Daily Mail
