Tango

The second season of this year’s Cape Town Concert Series will open on Saturday August 19 at the Baxter Concert Hall, at 8pm, with a concert and milonga for dancing by the SAMA-nominated Cape Town Tango Ensemble. The ensemble, established 20 years ago, comprises founder Stanislav Anguelov on bandoneon, Albert Combrink on piano, Petrus de Beer on violin and Charles Lazar on double bass. The group will play a programme of virtuosic chamber music from the tango repertoire. Cornerstones of the Piazzolla canon will be interspersed with French and Eastern European concert tangos, as well as first performances of new works by members of the ensemble itself. To demonstrate the physical dance aspect of tango, the recital will be followed by live dancing at a milonga in the foyer, celebrating the Baxter’s 40th year on a festive note. Tickets are R180 or R150 for senior citizens. Book through Computicket. Pictured, from left, are the Cape Town Tango Ensemble, Charles Lazar, Albert Combrink, Stanislav Anguelov and Petrus de Beer.
