JOHANNESBURG  - Social media “is where your target audience lives” as the average consumer picks up their mobile phone more than 2000 times a day.

This is according to entrepreneur Spicer de Villiers, specialist communications consultant at A Single Thread.

De Villiers was a speaker at this year's Business of Wine & Food Tourism Conference at the Spier Wine Estate in Stellenbosch this week, co-presenting with content creator Chris Joubert on “Talking social media/Bring your brand to life.”

Speaking on “Why you should put your brand on social media”, De Villiers said the first thing to realise was that the competition was already out there, with competition stats live to view, and if content was not created on the platform businesses would fall behind their competitors.

“Social media is where your target audience lives. I will give you some stats to check on. Basically, your average consumer picks up their phone 2600 times a day, which is pretty wild, and your top 10percent pick up their phones as many as 5400 times a day - and that excludes laptops. The amount of times spent online and on digital platforms is ridiculous,” said De Villiers.

There were more than 1billion people on Facebook and more than a 100million active users on Instagram on a monthly basis, he said.

Joubert said social media was low-cost and all the platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram free.

“If you have a decent following on your social media you can get really good stats for your product offering or anything you want to get out of the whole system,” said Joubert.
