JUDGMENT is expected to be handed down by the Moretele Magistrate’s Court today in the case against a man facing eight counts of rape.

Tshepo Mokoena, 37, from Marokolong in Hammanskraal, was arrested in 2016 for the rapes allegedly committed at Babelegi Bridge and in nearby bushes between 2006 and 2014. He has been in police custody.

According to Temba police spokesperson Constable Herman Moremi, the suspect committed the rapes in the area for about 10 years before he was caught.

“He attacked teenagers and women aged between 14 and 40 who were walking alone crossing the bridge and using shortcuts at the bush.”

Moremi said after Mokoena’s arrest, police managed to link him to other cases from the previous years.

“The suspect was unknown and the detectives searched for him for seven years till he was arrested in 2016 and managed to link him with all the case,” he said.
