Pretoria - The two suspects arrested in connection with last month’s murder of Collins Chabane mayor Moses “Big Moss” Maluleke are expected to appear before the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court today.

This follows the arrest of two others, suspected of having been involved in the assassination.

Maluleke was gunned down and his son left seriously wounded at his home in Saselamani village near Malamulele in the Limpopo Vhembe District by gunmen who approached the home and opened fire.

According to Limpopo police, the additional suspects are aged 46 and 47, and were were nabbed in Thohoyandou and Saselamani on Friday.

They face charges of conspiracy to commit murder, murder, attempted murder and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.

Maluleke, who was 56, died after three men stormed into his house and killed him in a hail of bullets in cold blood. They shot at, and injured, his 18-year-old son in the process.

Previously, police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said three gunmen entered Maluleke’s home at 7pm and demanded money. When the mayor and his son did not comply, they were shot.

First to be arrested in the same case were Shumani Nemadodzi, 47, and Avhatakali Mulaudzi, 42, who have already appeared twice in the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court.

In a statement, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Ndzangi said: “Nemadodzi and Mulaudzi are still in custody after abandoning their bail, and the matter has been adjourned to September 19 for further investigations.”

Last month the Pretoria News reported that prominent politicians in the area felt that Maluleke was a target because he was strict when it came to corruption.

They said he had zero tolerance for corruption and was targeted because he did not allow dodgy tenders to go through after he suspended several tenders due to maladministration.

Maluleke was buried at Shikundu outside Malamulele in Limpopo where Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha read the eulogy.
