Hopewell is to line up in the SA Champs again.
Jeppe High School for Boys’ Hopewell Nkosi will be competing at the SA Schools cross-country championships for the second year in a row later this month.

He ran in the Gauteng championships last weekend (September 1) and finished third, with the top six qualifying. “There was a sprint finish between the three of us, with less than a second between us at the end, so anyone could have won,” he said. “I ran with the winner most of the way, and then the other guy caught up to us right at the end.”

Hopewell Nkosi, right, in action.

Hopewell finished in the top three in all the inter-school meetings this year and he says cross-country is his favourite event. He also enjoys competing in other events for his school in inter-school athletics meetings.“I run the 400m, 800m, 1500m and 3000m School mate Mzwakhe Mashaba is under-16. like me, and he wins the 1500m, but I have won quite a few 800m races so far,” he said.

He believes running on the track is good for his cross-country, and it benefits his athletics team as well. “My training for cross-country helps my track running and I enjoy being part of the team at school meetings,” Hopewell said. “It’s been beneficial for both of us.”

We'll be holding thumbs for good performances at the inter-high athletics meeting on September 15, and at the SA championships a week later.
