One of the biggest events on the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and/or intersex (LGBTI) social calendar is set to make a grand return next month.
Not only can the thousands of people expected to attend Johannesburg Pride look forward to the gathering’s usual acclaimed festivities but not now they can enjoy the popular event for an extended period of time.
This is as event organisers have announced that instead of celebrating for just one day, proceedings will now be held for four days.
Johannesburg Pride Chair Kaye Alley told The Saturday that the event will take place from October 25 to October 28.
“It will kick off in typical Pride fashion with a Pride month launch party,” she said.
Alley said that another exciting feature was that Johannesburg Pride partnered with Out TV which has allowed the cable network to secure a pop-up channel on DSTV to broadcast Joburg Pride celebrations.
The channel will be available for a month on DSTV channel 198 from October 4 to November 4.
“The success of this month could culminate into a permanent dedicated channel for Out TV on the Multichoice platform which would mean a massive step forward for our community,” said Alley.
Apart from the added elements to the annual Joburg Pride event, attendees can still look to other features.
This includes ‘Beyond the Closet’, which will kick off festivities on October 25.
“This lifestyle conference focuses on educating the community on LGBTI rights, health care and family planning,” said Alley.
The ‘Fit and Fabulous’ event will take place on October 26 and this year, Joburg Pride has partnered red with various other fitness providers.
In the evening of the same day, the highly anticipated Mister Pride of Africa gala dinner will be held which will also showcase community heroes in the LGBTI community.
“Applications are open on our website,” said Alley.
The official Johannesburg Pride Parade and Festival will then be held on Saturday October 27 at Melrose Arch in accordance with the theme ‘Come out and Color the Street in our Diversity’.
“To accommodate the immense numbers of attendees, Johannesburg Pride will further be hosting a Pride of Africa Concert to add to the Pride experience,” said Alley.
Venue and artists to be released at the Gay Pride Month Launch Party on October 6 whille tickets are expected to be made available soon at a cost of R100.
With Joburg Pride festivities expected to wind down at this stage, a ‘’Stand up for Passion’ a family oriented breakfast will take place on Sunday October 28.
“This breakfast asks the community and family members to book a table and join us in celebrating your love and support with all of us,” said Alley.
