Kgothatso Montjane has made history by becoming the first wheelchair athlete to partner with a car dealership.
South Africa’s top ranked wheelchair tennis player drove away in a brand-new sponsored car from Audi Centre in Polokwane on Wednesday.
The Wimbledon semi-finalist who hails from Seshego in Limpopo received the keys to an Audi Q2 following last month’s announcement of the vehicle sponsorship by the dealership.
The dealership is one of the 10 sponsors secured by the world number 5 Montjane, following her exploits at the Wimbledon Championship in July and her great run in last week’s US Open in New York.
As it stands today, Montjane is the first South African black woman in the history of tennis to ever play at Wimbledon. She reached the semi-final.
Montjane is arguably the best wheelchair tennis player in the country and will with no doubt keep attracting big brands for years to come if she performs the way she has been this season.
"As Audi Centre Polokwane we were inspired by the story and journey of this great woman,” said dealer principal Thembinkosi Pantsi.
"KG’s determination to excel against all odds have inspired us to partner with her.
“We saw in her a ‘great ambassador of, discipline, focus, hard work and dedication’. We strongly believe that, great athletes like her deserve the support from corporates irrespective of what sporting code one is in. The mere fact that she achieved what she has achieved is really an inspiring story that no one should ignore,” added Pantsi.
Whether it is used for an off-road adventure or for everyday driving in a big city – the Audi Q2 which is worth half a million rand is the all-round vehicle.
Youthful and provocative in its styling and with all sorts of high-tech equipment on-board, the compact SUV is an urban-type vehicle for everyday driving and recreation, uniting a progressive design with a high level of functionality. Connectivity, infotainment and assistance systems are in level of full-size class.
"A big thank you to Audi for this beautiful car and to Optimize Agency who have been proactively involved in helping me secure sponsors including the Audi. As an athlete and as a brand I will make sure I represent your brand as good as I represent myself on court,” said Montjane.
"I am extremely excited and will keep working hard to attract more support."
