Johannesburg - This week we feature South African singer, songwriter and performing artist Carli J Myers.

Myers has been crafting her profession as a singer-songwriter and performing artist for the past four years, both in South Africa and abroad.

She has spent time in Los Angeles, New York and Canada, writing and recording new music with songwriters and producers who have worked with the likes of Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber and Fallout Boy, among many other international artists.

With her completely independent debut single Clutch shooting to number one on top South African radio station Algoa FM as well as charting on many other national stations, Carli’s dedicated and enthusiastic fan base began to grow.

She has since released follow-up tracks which have unsurprisingly also received extensive national radio support and have all featured on the SA music charts.

Her single Just Sayin also secured the number one spot on leading South African radio station Jacaranda FM within a matter of weeks. The song arose out of a collaboration in NYC with American Idol top 8 boys finalist Robbie Rosen.

Most recently she released her new single Authentically Yours.

Over the years she’s appeared and performed live on national TV, as well as at many events and venues, including with 16-time Grammy Awards winner David Foster, American Idol finalist Katherine McPhee, Pia Toscano, as well as at the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup.

You are able to collaborate with any SA musician. Who do you choose to work with and why?

I’d love to work with Matthew Mole – love his music and love his whole vibe.

The first song you learned all the lyrics to was...?

Love is All Around by Wet Wet Wet – my dad would play this song on his guitar and taught me to sing it when I was a little girl.

You need to pick one childhood game to play to save your life (aka Squid Game). Which childhood game do you choose to play?

Pick Up Sticks!

What are the three most popular items in your fridge right now?

Dates, Oat Milk, Butternut.

Tell us about the worst date you’ve ever had?

It’s wasn’t a proper date but it could have been. I was an early teen on holiday with my family in uMhlanga. I was chatting with some guys I had met at the hotel and who were trying to pick me up when my 8-year-old sister caught wind of our conversation. She heard the boys asking how old I was and she marched on over, put her hand on her hip and confidently put these boys in their place quoting from the musical A Chorus Line, telling them in the accent and all that “It’s not polite to ask a lady her age!”. I almost died. Safe to say, we didn’t proceed with dinner plans!

A wild night out of partying, or Netflix and chilling? Which do you prefer?

To be honest, I love doing both! But if I had to choose one right now it would be a night out partying – we haven’t been able to do that for so long, and I do love good music and a dance floor!

You are on death row. You are given one last meal and drink to enjoy. What do you choose to have?

That’s a tough one. Indian vegetarian curry and a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice.

Who would play you in a movie about your life?

Gal Gadot, I recently watched Wonder Woman and she’s just too cool!

What series should all South Africans be watching right now?

I actually don’t watch many series (sorry!) It’s summer time – we should be outside and in the sunshine!

Your ultimate cheat meal is...?

Churros from DisneyLand

The Saturday Star
