JOHANNESBURG - It may only be taking place in early November, but such is the popularity of the Old Mutual Soweto Marathon that entries are fast running out.

The organisers announced on Monday that half of the entries available for the marathon, half marathon and the 10km races have been sold. The deadline for entries is June 30 and runners have been urged to submit their entries or face the disappointment of missing out on participating in the popular race.

“I am delighted with the progress this far,” said Soweto Marathon Trust Chairman Sello Khunou. “It certainly goes to show how the people love this race - it’s a highlight on the calendar for many.”

The race will only accommodate

25 000 runners in all the three categories and while the deadline for entries is at the end of the month, they will close should the number be reached before the set date.

“I strongly urge those who haven’t yet entered to do so in order to avoid disappointment,” Khunou added.

Old Mutual’s head of brand, Karen Thomas, concurred. “We are not surprised that the entries for the event are flying, as every year the word gets out that the Soweto Marathon is the marathon with heart.

"Although it’s only in November, now is the ideal time to enter to give yourself a goal to stay fit and healthy during the winter months. We look forward to welcoming all runners at the start line later this year.”

The Soweto Marathon is scheduled to take place on November 5 with the start and finish at the FNB Stadium.
