Johannesburg - Olympic gold medalist Wayde van Niekerk and his teammate, 100-metre finalist Akani Simbine, are expected to touch down at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Wednesday morning.

And while a crowd gathers to welcome the Olympic heroes, a special surprise is awaiting Van Niekerk.

One of his sponsors, Audi, are set to hand over a brand new R8 V10 Plus to the 400-metre world record holder at the airport.

According to Audi SA, the sports car will be loaned to Van Niekerk for a year, with the option of extending, and during that time he will also have access to other Audi Sport models, such as the RS6 and RS7, when extra luggage space is required.

Here are five facts about the Audi R8 V10 Plus:

1. It's the fastest Audi ever

The new R8 V10 Plus is the fastest Audi road-car ever made. According to Audi, the car can screech from standstill to 100km/h in just 3.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 330km/h. Owning one will set you back a cool R3 089 000, however.

2. High-revving V10 potency

Naturally it's also the most powerful Audi on the block, its high-revving, mid-mounted 5.2-litre normally aspirated V10 engine producing a mammoth 449kW and 560Nm.

3. Superhero vision

The R8 will give you superhero vision if you order the optional LED laser headlights that literally double the range of the high-beam headlight at night.

4. Racing genes

The R8 road car has real racing genes as it was developed alongside the R8 LMS race car from the outset, benefiting from the expertise of race engineers and motorsport specialists.

5. Lighter than you think

It's really light for a sports car of its size thanks to an advanced Audi Space Frame structure made from carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and aluminium. The frame itself weighs just 200kg.
