East London – The four-day tour warm-up cricket match between a South African XI and Pakistan played at Buffalo Park on Monday petered out into a draw, as bad light brought an end to the proceedings shortly after tea.

Set 323 to win off 81 overs, the Invitation XI were on 190/5 when the umpires called time.

The Invitation XI started off brightly, with the Warriors’ Davy Jacobs going on the attack and treating Pakistan fast bowler Umar Gul with scant respect.

In six overs Gul conceded 41 runs, with Jacobs scoring the bulk of them.

But opening partner Andrew Puttick (26) was bowled by Junaid Khan and Stiaan van Zyl coming in at first drop was run-out for 45.

Van Zyl's dismissal brought Cody Chetty to the crease. He clobbered his first ball off Gul for a boundary. At lunch the Invitation side was on 70 for two, with Jacobs on 36 and Chetty on 14.

In the first over after lunch the tall Mohammad Irfan, coming on for the first time in the second innings, had Jacobs caught at slip by Younis Khan with no addition to the score.

Chetty went into his shell, but Vaughn van Jaarsveld played his normal attacking game.

Chetty lost his wicket when he tried a big hit, which he mistimed to give Umar Gul an easy catch at mid-on. Then Van Jaarsveld and Justin Ontong kept the scoreboard ticking over merrily in an entertaining partnership of 45 for the fifth-wicket, before Van Jaarsveld, deceived by Saeed Ajmal’s slower ball, gave the off-spinner an easy caught-and-bowled chance.

At tea the Invitation team were on 161/5 and Ontong raced to his half-century, hitting Ajmal for a huge six to bring up his personal milestone.

Earlier, Pakistan resuming on their overnight score of 240/5, quickly lost four wickets and at 250/9 declared the innings closed.

Kyle Abbott, in the first over of the day, trapped Sarfraz Ahmed in the crease without adding to his overnight score of 19.

Misbah-ul-Haq, the Pakistan skipper, who starting the day on 51, snicked a boundary off Abbott but then succumbed to the second new ball at 247/7 wickets, with his score on 55.

Umar Gul was bowled by Abbott. Saeed Ajmal had his stumps shattered by left-arm paceman Beuran Hendricks.

Abbott finished with the admirable figures of four for 26 off 13.4 overs and he was the stand-out bowler for the SA Invitation XI. – Sapa
