Cape Town - It took just 11.2 overs for South Africa to take the lead on the  first day of the Test against New Zealand, as the hosts went into tea on 119 for two at Newlands, in Cape Town, on Wednesday.

Having demolished New Zealand -- all out for 45 before lunch - South Africa lost the wicket of Hashim Amla in the middle session, lbw to James Franklin.

His 66 runs came off 74 balls and included nine boundaries after  sharing a 107-run second wicket stand with Alviro Petersen.

Graeme Smith fell just before lunch, lbw to Doug Bracewell for one.

At tea, Peterson was unbeaten on 45 and Jacques Kallis on six.

Earlier, after a spectacular bowling performance saw the Black Caps make the third lowest total by a team in a first innings after  winning the toss and electing to bat and the 12th lowest of all time.

Dale Steyn became the fourth South African to take 300 Test wickets but his feat was overshadowed by Vernon Philander’s five for seven which saw the Black Caps crumble to 5/27 before succumbing to their pitiful total.Morne Morkel took 3/14 and Steyn finished with 2/18. - Sapa
