Speculation continues about who will succeed Proteas captain Graeme Smith, but now Smith has an heir of his own.

Smith tweeted yesterday afternoon: “Myself and (Morgan Deane) welcomed our boy Carter McMorrin Smith into the world today! 3,2kg mom and baby doing well. so excited.”

Smith is recuperating from an ankle injury which has kept him from touring with the Proteas to Sri Lanka.

Later, he tweeted: “What a day was in the gym doing rehab next minute my wife and I were in surgery having a boy! thx so much for messages.”

And: “My wife was so incredible today! have so much love and respect for her.”

Deane, formerly a member of Irish band Industry and still a singer and songwriter, said in response: “Thanks for all the kind wishes every1. So nice to read! We are thrilled to have Carter come into our lives.”

The couple have a daughter, Cadence Christine, born last July. – Cape Argus
