Beijing – Marco Haller of Austria emerged fastest in a mass sprint to the finish to claim his first professional victory in the fourth stage of the Tour of Beijing on Friday.

The Katusha Team rider overtook Italian sprint specialist Alessandro Petacchi of Lampre-ISD to win the 165.5-kilometre stage from Yanqing to Chang Ping. Liquigas-Cannondale rider Elia Viviani of Italy was third.

German world time trial champion Tony Martin retains a 40-second overall lead heading into Saturday's 182.5-kilometre final stage to Pinggu Centenary Square.

Mitchell Docker (Orica GreenEdge), Alex Dowsett (Sky), Alex Howes (Garmin-Sharp), Jeremy Roy (FDJ-Big Mat) and Timofey Kritskiy (Katusha) led an early break in the first 20 kilometres, and held off several challenges before the race was decided in a bunched sprint to the finish. – Sapa-AP
