Cape Town - In anticipation of the Cape Town Cycle Tour, now only two days away, the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust has prepared a pre-event checklist to remind cyclists of the most important items and to warn against common mistakes overeager cyclists might fall into.

A quick checklist of items which should not be forgotten includes:

* Helmet.

* Start card.

* Racetec chip: This contains all essential information including medical history and emergency contacts.

* Bicycle Sticker.

* Official race number.

According to the trust, the most common rookie error is trying new supplements a few days before the event, due to nerves or feelings of uncertainty. Avoid new training gear and diets and stick to what you know.

Another common mistake is not spending enough time in the saddle. The Cycle Tour is a 109km race, which tests riders physically and mentally.

As Nolan Hoffman – winner of the 2014 and 2015 Cycle Tour told the Cape Argus – cycling was the best way to prepare as it ensures physical and mental preparedness.

The most common pre-event routine which nearly everyone is guilty of, is pumping up their tyres. A puncture or flat can cost you precious minutes and set a rider back. However, mechanical assistance along the route is available in case this setback occurs.

On cycling gear, the trust reminds cyclists to avoid wearing underpants underneath their cycling shorts. Most experienced cyclists wear two layers on top - a snug-fitting undershirt as well as a normal cycling shirt, or a cycling shirt plus windbreaker.

Other important reminders include:

* Cycling shoes and fully enclosed trainers with socks.

* Protective eyewear or cycling glasses. Avoid wearing glass lenses.

* Arm warmers or sun protectors

* At least one water bottle or a hydration pack.

* It’s recommended you carry a multi-tool for emergencies

* Sunblock and lip ice

Supporters and families are reminded to bring their enthusiasm and good spirits to race day.
