Johannesburg – South Africans Thomas Aiken and George Coetzee ended in a tie for fifth at the European Tour's Qatar Masters, in Doha, Qatar, on Saturday.

Both Aiken and Coetzee finished two shots adrift of Spaniard Sergio Garica's winning 16-under total for the week.

Aiken, a two-time winner on Tour, said he was pleased with his play this season which has produced two top-10s.

“I'm playing nicely and putting myself in good positions, so I can't complain,” said Aiken after his round.

“You just have to wait for your time and when the time is right, it will happen.

“Just keep practising and playing good golf and hopefully I'll get a couple of wins this year.”

Coetzee, still in search of his first victory on the European Tour, produced his second top-five finish in as many weeks.

Coetzee had opened the tournament with scores of 64 and 69, but a third round 73 dented his chances. Coetzee managed a final round four under 68, but came up just short.

Aiken, meanwhile, quietly compiled rounds of 67, 68, 70 and a closing 69 to end 12 under for the four days.

Aiken's final round was bogey-free, but said he was frustrated he could not produce a better run at the win.

“I'm obviously a little bit disappointed from today,” said Aiken.

“A good positive was that there were no bogeys, but unfortunately I just didn't make the putts that I needed to in the day and ended up two short.

“So (it) just unfortunately wasn't my week, but I can take a lot of positives out of it.”

The seven time-winner on the local Sunshine Tour, said he produced enough chances during his final round, and his next win on the European Tour could be around the corner based on his play.

“I had good chances at nine and 10 for birdie.

“And I didn't make those. And there were a couple others, but the pins were tough today, when you are a couple of shots back with a few holes to go, you try and push it a bit and to get to those flags is not easy.

“So you can make a few errors if you do, and I made one on 17, but luckily had a good up-and-down. “But just unfortunately it wasn't my day today, and you live on and you move on to the next week, and hopefully there are a few more good ones coming up.” – Sapa
