JOHANNESBURG - Chad le Clos completed South Africa’s gold rush in the pool, bagging the golden butterfly treble by adding the 100m title to his haul at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
The South African was again in a class of his own as he smashed into the wall first with a new Commonwealth 100m butterfly record of 50.65 seconds.
He finished ahead of James Guy of England in second place with 50.65 with Australia’s Grant Irvine taking bronze in 51.50.
Le Clos has won a total of four individual medals at the Games, the 50m, 100, 200m butterfly and the 100m freestyle silver medal.
Earlier, SA swimming legend Cameron van der Burgh and Tatjana Schoenmaker gave the country double gold in consecutive races.
Van der Burgh won his third consecutive 50m breaststroke gold medal at the Games beating world record-holder Adam Peaty posting a time of 26.58 seconds.
The London 2012 Olympic champion made sure he got a lead on Peaty and he held on for dear life to beat the Briton by 0.04.
"Obviously Adam and I have a really tough rivalry and he has had the upper-hand over me the last few years so to get on top of the podium and seeing my flag up there and hearing my national anthem being played is going to be, if I look back on my career it is going to be one of the highlights,” Van der Burgh said.
Peaty usurped Van der Burgh of both his Olympic and Commonwealth 100m breaststroke thrones after the last few years.
