KARLSRUHE, Germany – Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia set a world indoor record in running 1,500 meters in 3 minutes, 55.17 seconds at the Karlsruhe indoor meet on Saturday.

Dibaba, the world indoor champion, shaved over three seconds off the previous record of 3:58.28 set by Russia's Elena Soboleva in 2006 in Moscow.

The 22-year-old Dibaba, the younger sister of three-time Olympic champion Tirunesh Dibaba and Olympic silver medalist Ejegayehu Dibaba, also won the event in 2013 and 2012.

The meet in Karlsruhe is the first of six top-level indoor events to help athletes prepare for the world indoor championships in Sopot, Poland, from March 7-9. – Sapa-AP
