Sports minister Fikile Mbalula says it’s time to stop poking fun of Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer and get behind the team.

Meyer has received widespread criticism after leading the Boks to a disgraceful defeat to Japan in their World Cup opener last Saturday.

And 2007 hero coach Jake White had his say yesterday: “We have become an ordinary team. Nobody fears us anymore. [Pool B rivals] Scotland have started to fancy their chances and it worries me.”

But Mbalula defended the Bok boss, who is the joke of the internet.

He tweets: “Name calling is the pre occupation of the average mind, the focus now is to get everyone of us behind the team ...

“I kno that our coach is not a favorite of many, But there’s no self respecting team that has fired the coach in the middle of a tournament.

“The coaching staff and playas know very well that South Africans are intolerant to mediocrity ...support them to bounce back ...

“Am sure by now the team knows their mistakes and they will work hard to rectify. The coach the players surely they know by now we stand ..

Moer

“Cumon on boys moer hulle dood!”

Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba also lent his support.

He says: “As Bafana Bafana we are behind them and know they can turn things around.

“We were and are still disappointed at the outcome but it’s not the end of the tournament. We still believe and have a lot of trust in the team. All the best against Samoa on Saturday, we know you can do it.” - Daily Voice
