Hamilton - Tickets to Saturday's Super 15 rugby final between the Waikato Chiefs and Durban-based Sharks sold out on Wednesday within hours of going on sale.

Fans queued for hours through a cold night to be near the front of the queue when tickets for the match at the 25 000-seat Waikato Stadium were made available from 8am local time.

When ticket booths opened, the queue stretched more than 300m. More than 1 500 tickets sold in the first 20 minutes and by 9.30am only 2 000 remained.

Tickets that went on sale to online buyers were also snapped up quickly for the first-ever Super rugby final in Hamilton. - Sapa-AP
