CAPE TOWN – Former Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer is set to take up the top job at French club Stade Français on a three-year deal.
Reports emerged in the French media this past week that identified Meyer as the frontrunner to take over as director of rugby at the Paris-based club, and it increasingly appears that the move is a mere fait accompli.
Meyer has kept a relatively low profile ever since vacating his post as the Bok coach following the 2015 World Cup, but he has remained a highly-regarded figure in rugby circles across the globe.
As it is, Stade Français have been on the lookout for a top candidate to take over the leadership reins from Greg Cooper following his departure in January due to personal reasons.
Although Meyer has yet to confirm that he will take up a role at Stade Français, it is understood that talks are at an advanced stage for him to move back into a high-profile coaching position.
Stade won the Top 14 title as recently as 2015, but are currently languishing in 11th position in competition standings and are facing the threat of relegation.
It's hoped that Meyer's involvement could spark a reversal in fortunes as he gets set to link up with former Springboks such as Morné Steyn, Willem Alberts, Gurthrö Steenkamp and Heinke van der Merwe.
