EDINBURGH – Ryan Wilson returned from injury to strengthen the Scotland team as coach Gregor Townsend on Wednesday made four changes to his side for the clash with Australia at Murrayfield on Saturday.

The loose forward missed last weekend’s narrow loss to world champions New Zealand because of a shoulder injury, but is fit to play in the last of three November internationals.

Scotland started with a win over Samoa on November 11.

New Zealand-born prop Simon Berghan, making his first start for Scotland, was preferred to Zander Fargerson in the front row, while Australian-born Ben Toolis was dropped to the bench in favour of Gary Gilchrist.

Sean Maitland, who was a star in Super Rugby for the Crusaders before moving north, is back on the wing after belatedly joining the squad this week on his return from injury.

“Last weekend’s game was a proper Test match – intense, competitive and full of drama,” coach Gregor Townsend told a news conference.

“Unfortunately, we just fell short of our goal, and were disappointed with the loss, but take confidence going into the game against Australia.”

Scotland, who came within a disputed last-minute penalty of beating Australia in the 2015 Rugby World Cup quarter-final at Twickenham, scored an unexpected away win over the Wallabies in June.
