Brazil will postpone its decision on the legitimacy of Libya's National Transitional Council until the UN General Assembly rules on the issue, Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota said on Friday.
“We do not feel that it is necessary to pronounce ourselves at this stage,” Patriota said after talks with his Bulgarian counterpart Nikolay Mladenov in Sofia.
“We believe that at the forthcoming UN General Assembly a decision will be taken on who is the legitimate representative of Libya... and this will decide for the internatonal community.”
He added however: “Our participation in the Paris conference on Thursday implies that we consider the transitional council an interlocutor in this process.”
Brazil, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, has so far refrained from recognising the NTC and dispatched its Cairo ambassador Cesario Melantonio to represent the country at the Paris “friends of Libya” conference on Thursday.
Patriota also insisted Friday on UN monitoring of the post-conflict situation in Libya.
Bulgaria has already recognised the new ruling council as a representative of the Libyan people but Mladenov urged Friday that “the new institutions in Libya should be put in place under the aegis of the UN.” - Sapa-AFP
