JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s record 6-0 win margin at the weekend against minnows Seychelles in next year’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier is so rare that we’ve decided the entire starting line-up should make our Team of the Week.
Itumeleng Khune was able to keep yet another clean sheet in national team colours, while captain and defender Thulani Hlatshwayo got on the score sheet moments after forcing Nigel Nigel to put one past his own goalkeeper to give Bafana Bafana an early lead.
It was a pretty straightforward victory from then on, with coach Stuart Baxter’s men dominant until the last kick of ball.
One of the standout players was Aubrey Modiba at left wing, a player who had initially been omitted from the 24-man squad by a typo, according to Baxter.
He justified why his name should have been among the chosen in these two back-to-back qualifiers against Seychelles.
Modiba set up the second goal from a corner kick and gave the opponents a torrid time whenever he was on the ball. This result also meant Bafana bettered their highest scoring match from eight years ago - when they beat Guatemala 5-0 in a game that was later found to have been fixed prior to the 2010 World Cup on home soil.
