The City will host a 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifier match between Bafana Bafana and the Central African Republic at Cape Town Stadium on March 23.

This was approved at a mayco member meeting yesterday.

Mayor Patricia de Lille joked that they would agree on hosting the game “on condition they score more goals”.

Bafana played at the stadium in January, with nearly 40 000 spectators boosting Safa’s confidence in hosting matches in Cape Town. In January, Safa approached the city to host a 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifying match with the Central African Republic after the successful hosting of the Norway game.

Grant Pascoe, mayoral committee member for tourism, events and marketing, said: “They (Safa) were impressed with the facility and the great support received.

“It will be an estimated expenditure of R3.1 million to host the game, with cost recovery on ticket sales, hospitality and concessions.”

The match will be televised live on SABC and Supersport. – Cape Argus
