Fifa would not confirm or deny media reports on Monday that the global football body had included South Africa as part of its ongoing investigations into match fixing.
“Contacts with various member associations are taking place as part of an ongoing worldwide investigation into match fixing,” a Fifa spokesman told Sapa in an email.
“We hope you understand that we cannot provide you more details while the investigation is ongoing.”
According to the Sunday Sun, two of South Africa's warm-up matches ahead of the 2010 World Cup would be investigated. Bafana Bafana's 2-1 victory over Colombia on May 27, in which they were awarded two penalties, and their record 5-0 victory over Guatemala on May 31, which saw Bafana again given two spot kicks, were both to be explored by a Fifa security team which would arrive in South Africa next week, the Daily Sun reported.
Kenyan referee Langat Kipngetich, who was in charge for the match against Colombia, and Ibrahim Chaibou of Niger, who handled the game against Guatemala, were both reportedly under investigation.
Safa spokesman Morio Sanyane was unavailable for comment. – Sapa
