Cape Town – Captain Itumeleng Khune will not only be trying to win the African Nations Championship (Chan) with Bafana Bafana over the next few weeks, but he will also be putting himself in the shop window for German Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart.

Stuttgart executive Fredi Bobic, a former German national team striker who played against Bafana in 1995 in Johannesburg, confirmed that Khune’s agents have made contact with the German side to arrange a trial for the 26-year-old goalkeeper.

However, the trial has been put on hold after the Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper was selected to lead South Africa during Chan, which kicks off on Saturday in Cape Town.

“We got a request from his agent if it is possible that he can come for a trial for two or three days.

“But with the situation like this, he is in the national team, the timing isn’t good,” Bobic said on Wednesday.

“But now we have to find the right time. It’s all up to him to tell us when he can come to train with our goalkeeper coaches, because the training is a little bit different. But I heard he is a good goalkeeper.”

Bobic, who scored 10 goals in 37 appearances for Germany, said he was surprised that Bafana had selected their best players for a tournament like Chan, but added that at least he will be able to see Khune in action.

“I heard normally the best players don’t play in this tournament, but now they are playing for South Africa. In the end I guess they want to win it. That is why the best available team will start,” said Bobic.

“I will watch him on Saturday at the stadium, if not then I will watch him on television.”

Stuttgart are spending the German winter break in Cape Town to prepare for the second half of their season.

The former Bundesliga champions play a friendly match against Vasco da Gama on Thursday in Stellenbosch, followed by further matches against Ajax Cape Town and Dutch side PEC Zwolle.
