A disastrous penalty attempt by Luther Singh encapsulated Bafana Bafana’s performance as they slumped to a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to Madagascar in the Cosafa Cup quarter-finals in Polokwane on Sunday afternoon.

After the match ended goalless after 90 minutes, it came down to the lottery of spot-kicks.

And with a minnow outfit such as the Malagasy, one would’ve expected Bafana to cruise through in regulation time.

They didn’t lack goal-scoring chances either. Singh was one of the culprits in that regard as well, with Lebogang Maboe and Aubrey Modiba also guilty of failing to find the net.

The array of Absa Premiership stars were unable to get past the Indian Ocean islanders.

But after three penalties each in the shootout, Singh was casual with his effort, hardly breaking into a run-up as he side-footed the ball, and it was saved by the Madagascar goalkeeper.

Singh appeared to appeal to the referee that the goalie had come off his line before he struck the ball, but he was ignored.

This means that Bafana go out of the Cosafa Cup at the quarter-final stage for a second year in a row.
