It’s just one more sleep to go to the Cosafa Women’s Championship final, and Banyana Banyana are calling on you to support them against Cameroon.

Janine van Wyk, Linda Motlhalo and Kaylin Swart took to Twitter on Friday to rally the troops ahead of Saturday’s decider against Cameroon at Wolfson Stadium in Port Elizabeth.

“Hey South Africa! Thanks for all the support that you’ve been giving us throughout the Cosafa Cup,” Van Wyk started to lots of giggles, before Swart added: “So, we’ve made it the final, and we are asking everyone to come in their numbers to come and support us.”

Motlhalo said “At Wolfson Stadium at 12 ’o clock against Cameroon” before all three players finished off with “For Banyana Banyana, come show your love!”

But while the South Africans are favourites to retain their title on Saturday (12pm kickoff), coach Desiree Ellis knows that a tough battle awaits against Cameroon, who beat Zambia 1-0 in their semi-final on Thursday.

“They are a different kind of team – very strong, very physical. So we are going to have to rotate the ball around, and try to pull them away in areas where we want to attack,” Ellis said after Banyana’s 2-0 semi-final victory over Uganda.

“You get physical teams at Afcon, so this will sort of prepare us for that. But if we can do better in the things we can do well, then we will get the result we want.

“We have always been a team that is organised at the back, and if we don’t concede, then we have a chance of winning the game.”

Ellis has urged her charges to show greater patience on the ball, as she is still unhappy with the amount of goal-scoring opportunities being wasted – something they can’t afford in the final.

“We have consistently worked on our finishing, and that’s all we can do. We are getting a lot more on target, and many times we hit it past the post,” the former Banyana captain said.

“The goalkeeper has often got the Player of the Match award against us. But we also have to work at home as you don’t get a lot of time to work on things in camp.

“But we are working consistently on that (finishing), because it is a big concern.

“We wanted to rotate the ball much quicker, as we felt we were a bit slow and at times, we gave it away when we were not under pressure.

“We need to learn to be a little bit more patient.”
