Losing to the old enemy Liverpool seems to have been the last straw for the Manchester United bosses as they have fired Jose Mourinho with immediate effect.

The Red Devils announced in a statement on their website on Tuesday that Mourinho would be leaving the club, which follows the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

“Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect,” the club said.

“The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.

“A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.”

Michael Carrick, who is the assistant to Mourinho, might become the interim manager while United search for a replacement.

Mourinho leaves with the club lying in sixth position on the Premier League log with 26 points, 19 behind leaders Liverpool.
