CAPE TOWN – The morning after the night before... Loris Karius will be waking up – well, that’s if he has slept at all – to the reality of Saturday night, or was it more of a nightmare in his case?

The Liverpool keeper is the subject of a lot of criticism after their Champions League final loss to Real Madrid in Kiev.

It was a night to forget for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

After Mohamed Salah left the field injured, the night just got worse for the Reds.

Karius gifted the first goal to Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema when the German tried to throw the ball out to a teammate, but it rebounded off Benzema’s foot into the net.

The second and final nail in the coffin was when Karius failed to hold on to a shot from Gareth Bale, which saw the result fall into the hands of Los Blancos in injury time.

“My mistakes cost the team and lost us the final... I’m so sorry, to everyone.”

Once the final whistle was blown, Karius collapsed into a heap on the pitch and broke down in tears.

He then walked to where the Liverpool fans were and began gesturing an apology.

Understandably, no one is more upset than the man himself.

In an interview with British sport radio station TalkSport, Karius found words hard to come by.

“Today, I lost the game for my team... I feel sorry for everyone. I am sorry to everyone, from the whole club... That mistakes cost dearly (sic). If I could go back in time, I would,” he said.

“I feel sorry for my team; I know I let them down today. It’s very hard right now, but that’s the life of a goalkeeper, but you have to get your head up again.”

Karius says he had the support of his teammates after the game despite what happened, but the mood was sombre given the result.

“Of course everyone tried to cheer me up, but there was just silence everywhere because everyone was really disappointed, and it will take us time to get over it. “
