Johannesburg - Defending champions SuperSport United have been given a tough start to the defence of their title, drawing Moroka Swallows in the Nedbank Cup last 32 stages.

The draw to the South African version of the FA Cup, carrying a R7-million cheque for the winners and a spot in the Caf Confederation Cup club tournament, was conducted in Randburg on Monday night.

The clash between United and Swallows will be a “replay” of their MTN8 final earlier in the season.

Other appetising fixtures saw Ajax Cape Town play host to Mamelodi Sundowns, while Bidvest Wits take on Kaizer Chiefs. Premiership rookies University of Pretoria will meet Maritzburg United, with Orlando Pirates travelling to play Safa league outfit Maluti FET College.

However, the Buccaneers’ tie could be tricky in the “David versus Goliath” competition that has seen small teams embarrass their Premier Soccer League (PSL) opponents in the past.

After the draw was conducted, PSL general manager Derek Blanckensee said: “This should be another cracking Nedbank Cup for the fans, where smaller teams have a chance at making history.”

The preliminary round stages involving First Division teams will be played on February 13.

The last 32 stage of the tournament will start from February 22, with the league set to finalise dates and venues for the matches at a later stage. - Sapa
