CAPE TOWN – Fadlu Davids has extended his stay with Maritzburg United.

United chairman Farook Kadodia confirmed the news after his side succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup final at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday night.

Sthembiso Dlamini netted the winner for Stars and sent them to Caf Confederation Cup.

Stars also walked away with R7 million for their triumph.

“No, no (He is not leaving). Fadlu has signed a new contract for us for a further two years. This happened last week,” Kadodia said as he assured his fans that the coach is staying.

Davids was handed a two-year contract at the start of the season.

SuperSport United are reported to be interested in Davids’ services. The club is still searching for the new coach.

Davids’ meteoric rise has been worth admiration. In his debut season as the head coach, he has reached two semi-finals, including the Nedbank Cup finale.

Earlier in the season, he propelled the Team of Choice to the semi-finals of the MTN8. Under his guidance, United finished fourth on the Premiership log.

“The better team lost. The guys played well. We didn’t take our chances in the small box in the first half. We played good football.

“Cup football like I said, you have to have a nose of steel. We made one mistake and we were punished. It is sad, it is cruel, but it is football.

“Goals win matches. We had plenty of chances. I can’t say more than that,” a dejected Kadodia said.

The Team of Choice will face Cape Town City in the quarter-finals of the MTN8 when the new season resumes.

“We will have a break, and I’m sure the players will come back fighting. We are in the MTN8.

“We are not breaking the team. The team is staying intact. We look forward to better things,” Kadodia stated with a positive attitude.

United players missed out on R3.5 million after succumbing to Stars in the Nedbank Cup final.

“We are not going to put pressure on the boys to win the MTN8. We need to enjoy what they’ve been doing today. They played well, but couldn’t convert the chances.”
