Johannesburg – Fifa official Jerome Valcke has become a South African citizen, The Times reported on Friday.

It quoted home affairs spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa as saying Valcke was granted citizenship on June 15.

"The reasons are for his contribution towards South Africa hosting the 2010 World Cup and the development of football in the country. He is also married to a South African citizen."

Mamoepa said the granting of citizenship to Valcke was not unusual.

"It has been granted to sportsmen as well," he said, referring to Zimbabwe-born Springbok rugby player Tendai "Beast" Mtawarira and Pakistani-born Protea cricketer Imran Tahir. – Sapa
