CAPE TOWN - Former England captain Wayne Rooney has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

According to English newspaper the Mirror, the Everton striker was stopped by police near his home in Chesire, England after a night out on Thursday.

Further details about the arrest are yet to emerge.

Rooney rejoined Everton during the recently-closed transfer window after over a decade at Manchester United.

He became United and England’s all-time leading scorer during his time at Old Trafford, but decided to rejoin his boyhood club.

The striker scored in both of his first two games back at the Toffees and was thought to be on contention for a return to England.

However, he retired from international duty in August, citing his desire to give his all for Everton.

The 31-year-old last turned out for Everton in Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea and is reported to have trained on Thursday.

It is not known whether the reported arrest will affect his immediate playing future with Everton, as the Premier League is currently on an international break.
