Orlando Pirates are in trouble with the PSL following the unruly behaviour of fans when SuperSport United dumped the treble winners out of the MTN8 on Saturday.
On Sunday, PSL head of stakeholders and communication Connie Motshumi told The Star that Pirates would be hauled before its disciplinary committee to face misconduct charges.
The chaos started after Pirates striker Benni McCarthy was red-carded for a second bookable offence. The fans, angered by referee Robert Smith’s decision,reacted by throwing bottles and vuvuzelas onto the pitch.
Fans also lit fireworks and threw them at SuperSport goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez.
The referee then stopped the game for a few minutes, calling the players to the centre of the field.
Pirates, the MTN champions, went on to lose the second leg of the semi-final 3-0 at Orlando Stadium. The first leg on August 18 ended in a 0-0 draw at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
Star photographer Ihsaan Haffejee needed three stitches on his head after a bottle hit him. He said Pirates fans hurled missiles at SuperSport and Kaizer Chiefs supporters after the game.
Haffejee said police assisted SuperSport supporters to leave the stadium but Pirates fans continued to hurl objects. He said it was while police were escorting the supporters out of the stadium that a bottle hit him on his head.
