CAPE TOWN - Cape Town City had the South African soccer social media world on edge throughout Friday morning as they promised to announce the “signing of the season”.

And while there were rumours abound that the signing would be Mamelodi Sundowns’ Zimbabwean superstar Khama Billiat, it turned out that it was not to be a player at all.

Sports betting company SportPesa, instead, were named as the first ever shirt sponsor of Cape Town City.

The Citizens played their entire first season in the PSL without a brand on the front of their jerseys, but chairman John Comitis had promised in recent weeks that he was working hard on securing a sponsor.

Now the four-year deal has come to fruition, with SportPesa also the sponsors of English Premier League clubs Everton and Hull.
