Botshabelo - Bloemfontein Celtic retained their place in the top half of the Premiership table with a 2-1 win over 10-man Polokwane City in Botshabelo on Wednesday night.

The hosts dominated throughout, despite league strugglers Polokwane putting up a fight in the first half, in an effort to stay in the game.

Lerato Lamola had the first shot in anger in the fourth minute, but City goalkeeper Modiri Marumo produced a diving save as he deflected the ball to safety.

Celtic took the lead midway through the first half when Joel Mogorosi collected from Keagan Buchaman and hit the back of the net.

The visitors, however, struck back shortly after the restart when Moffat Mdluli found the equaliser.

Creating one last real chance in the opening period, Musa Bilankulu connected with a corner from Buchaman in the 26th minute, but he fired his header wide to the right.

Celtic surged forward after the break and were able to draw clear again within the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Frank Mhango, who replaced Vuyani Ntanga at the start of the second stanza, was set up by Lamola and put the home side back in front.

Polokwane were delivered another blow with 25 minutes left in the match when Tlou Molekwane was sent off for a foul on Mhango.

While Celtic were unable to capitalise on the advantage with another goal, they stretched their unbeaten home run to eight straight league matches.

Polokwane, who were two points clear of the relegation zone ahead of the midweek fixtures, were handed their 12th defeat in 21 matches this season.
