Cape Town - Newly-promoted Premiership outfit Chippa United are heading out of the Mother City, the club boss Siviwe Mpengesi said in Cape Town on Tuesday.

“In our four years, we have had three promotions and one relegation, so our record speaks for itself. We achieved all that here in this small town of Philippi,” Mpengesi said.

“Having had the experience of being in the Premiership before (two seasons ago), with all the challenges and pressures, we thought this year we need to do things differently in all areas.”

He cited the lack of support from local government and the lack of sponsors as reasons for the move.

“Sponors would rather go for cricket or rugby.

“I saw myself as someone who could really change the face of Cape Town, but circumstances forced us to look for something else.”

Although Mpengesi did not actually reveal the club's new location, but alluded that Chippa United would be based in Port Elizabeth next season.

“The wish for us was that we wanted to be out of this town for next season, it was just a question of which city wanted us.

“We are still going to make a formal announcement but this is our last press conference in Cape Town.

“Out of respect to the municipality that is hosting us, we are leaving the announcement for them to make tomorrow but the team is leaving, it's a done deal. We will be out of Cape Town, at least for the next 20 years.”

The club also announced the appointment of former Ajax Cape Town PRO Thabiso Shooz Mekuto as the team's chief operations officer.
