CAPE TOWN – Chippa United are already showing that they will mean business next season by signing in-form midfielder Gift Motupa on Tuesday.

Motupa has left Orlando Pirates, although he was on loan at Baroka FC in the recently-completed season.

Stymied at the Buccaneers, Motupa got a chance to prove his quality at Baroka in Limpopo, and netted nine times to underline his ability as a goal-scorer.

That tally was just two shy of top goal-getters Percy Tau of Mamelodi Sundowns and Rodney Ramagalela of Polokwane City.

Chippa United announced the Motupa signing on their Twitter account: “He showed his quality at Baroka FC, scoring 9 goals, and we have no doubt he will add fire power to our attack next season,” said the club’s executive chairman Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi.

Eastern Cape outfit Chippa were pushed down one log position from ninth to 10th on Tuesday following an arbitrator’s ruling on Ajax Cape Town striker Tendai Ndoro saw SuperSport United gain three points to move up to seventh.

So Mpengesi will hope that 23-year-old midfielder Motupa will bolster the Chippa strike-force, as the Chilli Boys scored just 27 goals in the Absa Premiership this past season.

Only Cape Town City (26), Bloemfontein Celtic (25), Platinum Stars (23) and Ajax Cape Town (21) scored fewer goals.
