Ajax Cape Town are closing in on a deal with veteran defender Siboniso “Pa” Gaxa, who is on trial at the club.

Urban Warriors coach Muhsin Ertugral has said that he wants to sign the well-travelled player.

“I think he will sign with us. His experience is something you can’t buy. He is an international player. If you look at our situation we need someone with experience at the back. Going forward we are looking good but we have been conceding goals. Gaxa hasn’t played since October. We are currently assessing his fitness,” Ertugral explained.

Gaxa last appeared in top-flight football last season when he was playing for PSL champions Wits.

He started out at SuperSport United in 2002 and left in 2008 to join Mamelodi Sundowns, where he spent two seasons before moving to Belgium where he plied his trade at Lierse.

Gaxa returned to South Africa and signed for Kaizer Chiefs in 2012. He won two league titles, the Nedbank Cup and MTN8 with Amakhosi. He has played 55 games for Bafana Bafana.

“He has been playing at professional level for more that 10 years, which is rare at this level in South Africa. We have to see how quick we can get him to be available. We need to double up his sessions so that he can meet the fitness demand of other players,” Ertugral said.
