JOHANNESBURG - A surprise inclusion makes our Team of the Week after the Nedbank Cup produced an upset this weekend with first division side Ubuntu Cape Town stunning Premier Division club Polokwane City.
Ubuntu striker Ranga Chivaviro scored a brace for the Capetonians, giving them something to cheer about as they sit at the bottom of the log with a strong possibility of playing amateur football next year.
With the axe looming large over Ubuntu, the Nedbank Cup offered its players an opportunity to market themselves should they fail to survive. Chivaviro, who has been a deadly striker since his days at Witbank Spurs, showed his quality to take his team to the last 16. He is part of a strike force that also includes Mariztburg United's Andre Fillecia.
The Belgian striker has to raise his game to fill the boots left by Evans Rusike who signed for SuperSport United. Rusike didn’t only score for the Team of Choice but he also helped them defend with his high work rate. Fillecia doesn’t work as much as Rusike but his positioning is good which hints that he could be the club’s go-to man for goals. He scored a brace against Swallows FC in a match Maritzburg had no business stretching to extra-time after taking the lead in the first minute.
While Chivaviro and Fillecia got the goals, Itumeleng Khune stopped them with a brilliant performance against Golden Arrows to show why he is South Africa’s No. 1. What made his performance even more impressive is that he did so with an upset stomach.
